Letters to the Editor

Not Funny

While we at Silicon Valley Impeachment have as much of a sense of humor as the next person, we fail to see the humor in our action in front of your newspaper office Thursday, July 24. Apparently your Fly reporter did see humor in our action ("We Got Served," Fly, July 30).

We were not standing in front of your office breathing exhaust fumes for one-and-a-half hours just to be considered a joke. Nor were we there for our own pleasure or for our own egos. We were there because we take what has happened to our country very seriously. The fact that American citizens are being spied on is no joking matter. The fact that the Bush administration refuses to honor congressional subpoenas is no joking matter. The fact that families are losing their homes to foreclosure is no joking matter. The fact that over 4,000 American soldiers have lost their lives in this illegal Iraq war is no joking matter. The fact that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi refuses to hold President Bush and Vice President Cheney accountable through impeachment is no joking matter.

As concerned citizens, we question why our local media, such as your newspaper, are not concerned enough to cover the topic of the need for impeachment. What we ask for is an article exploring the evidence presented at last Friday's House Judiciary hearing. We feel that the citizens of Silicon Valley deserve a fair accounting of Friday's hearing. A reporting of the facts both pro-impeachment and against impeachment is necessary for an informed citizenry.

We urge your newspaper to write an article that will inform your readers about the historical events that are taking place in Washington, D.C. Metroreaders need to know about the articles of impeachment that Rep. Dennis Kucinich has presented. The readers need to know about Friday's House Judiciary hearing. The readers need to know about the national grassroots impeachment movement.

In the Fly article, your newspaper has made light of the urgency for government accountability. Now that you have made fun of the subject it is time to present impeachment in a serious manner, because what is taking place in our country is no joking matter.

Biggest Story On Earth

Regarding the MUFON article ("Truth or Scare," MetroNews, July 30). Thanks for having someone report on the recent MUFON Symposium in San Jose in a respectable manner. It's refreshing to see in a world where most of the mainstream press is corporately controlled and encourages representatives to disrespect such subject matter by including the "giggle factor" and/or concentrating solely on "the fringe" and not hard evidence, documentation and testimony.

If just 1 percent of what UFO investigators are researching and disseminating to the public is real, then this is, indeed, the greatest story on earth ... and beyond.

Size Bias

I wanted to say that I am very disappointed with your writer Marianne Messina's language regarding Sean Patrick O'Connor's (Mark) waist ("Boy Band Apart," MetroArts, Aug. 6). Sean (who is in the middle of the picture on your article) may not be the thinnest man to ever grace the stage, but he most definitely does not have "doughboy midriff." I am so ashamed that your writer put this unnecessary comment into this article. Saying words like that only spreads self-loathing thoughts and re-enforce what shallow air-brushed magazines continue to shout. I would have appreciated if your writer would have stuck to his performance (he hits quite a few mind-blowingly high notes) and left his belt size out of it.

Shock Value

Re "Toxic Shock" (MetroNews, June 25): Please keep including stories and interviews such as the one about toxic chemicals found practically everywhere, written by Diane Solomon (with Mark Schapiro talking about his new book).

The next taboo issue would be the light brown apple moth toxic twist ties already applied around De Anza College (and on campus as well) and planned to be applied in Sunnyvale and San Jose for now. It's amazing but this is the issue not talked about in Santa Clara County, nor addressed by any local government in our area; Santa Clara County has been the only county in the Bay Area not opposing the spraying publicly, or saying something about the entire program.
