Vans Warped Tour

SLAP ON your Old Skools, skinny jeans and ironic T-shirt—it's time for the Vans Warped Tour. Though formerly a showcase for souly punk-rock acts, the Warped Tour has been bringing in a more eclectic lineup in recent years, and 2008 is no exception. The questionably talented but incredibly foxy Katy Perry will canoodle onstage in hot pants singing "I Kissed a Girl," the hit worldwide anthem for bicurious college girls desperately seeking attention. More traditionally Warped-friendly acts like Against Me!, Gym Class Heroes and Motion City Soundtrack will also get to pound their frets, alongside Tom DeLonge's current band Angels & Airwaves and SoCal ska punkers Reel Big Fish. Word to all the emo-haired 15-year-old kids that will be in attendance: Haven't eaten anything that day? Don't go into the mosh pit. Dehydrated as of late? Don't go into the mosh pit. So intoxicated you can barely stand up? Don't go into the mosh pit. Remember, it's called mosh pit for a reason: you get moshed, it smells like an armpit, there's no oxygen and you come out feeling molested ... we know you like it, but know your limits so we don't have to fish out your passed-out ass in the middle of Cobra Starship's set.

Habib Koité and Bamada

EMERGING from Mali's Khassonké tribe, Habib Koité is an incredibly famous figure in his homeland. A virtuoso on pentatonically tuned guitar, Koité has long been revered in the West as a guitarist's guitarist, the sort of player that could teach the best a few new tricks. Bonnie Raitt—no slouch on the six-string herself—is a professed fan who invited Koité to perform on her latest release, and she's not the only legendary player in awe of Koité's talents. Proudly burning the candle for the griot tradition, Koité has made a name for himself by refusing to bow to Western trends, instead making the West come to him. In this way, he stands as an artist with a strong sense of cultural integrity in this new global century.

John Oates

FRESH off an appearance at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, the formerly mustachioed half of Hall and Oates will be performing a trip down memory lane in this intimate Redwood City solo show titled "The Stories Behind the Songs." Oates will chew the fat on both his solo work and all the hit tunes he made as half of one of the most successful (and unintentionally facetious) pop duos in history. Fun fact: David "Son of Sam" Berkowitz has claimed he was inspired to murder by the Hall and Oates ditty "Rich Girl." We can only imagine what "Maneater" must have inspired him to do.
