So what is the solution to deter crime?
Invest in robust public systems for reentry & preemptive support: housing+income security, healthcare+mental health access, etc. This short piece can only begin to gesture toward building such systems.

Back in the 90's our government called people who looked like me "animals" and passed laws that sent them to jail in staggering numbers. Ask anyone my age if they had a police officer's gun point at them before they were 16 (I had six)
